This week, I had the pleasure of having a chat with Hacia Atherton, whose family has a proud legacy in the trades industry that spans multiple generations. Her great great grandfather played a pivotal role in championing eight-hour working days for the industry. Today, Hacia is the founder of Empowered Women in Trades, a company committed to promoting gender diversity in the trades. Our discussion revolved around the importance of boosting the representation of women in these fields and exploring ways to encourage their active participation.
Diversity took centre stage during our conversation, not only highlighting the overall need for inclusivity, but also focusing on specific pathways and opportunities for women in apprenticeships and various trades. We also delved into strategies for employers to cultivate a supportive environment that attracts and retains women in their organisations, ensuring their success in these roles.
To sum it up, my conversation with Hacia shed light on the vital role of gender diversity in the trade industry. We delved into several aspects of promoting and supporting women in trades, including entry routes into the field, employer practices, the advantages of diversity, and the role of education in shaping perceptions and possibilities.
Amongst other things in this podcast, we discussed:
- The Role of Education in Promoting Trades
- Promoting Gender Inclusion in Trades
- Leadership and Emotional Intelligence in a Male-Dominated Business Environment
- Positive Psychology and Resilience Building
- Apprenticeship programs
- Promoting Diversity in Hiring
- Technical Proficiency vs. Leadership Skills in Promotions
