S2. Ep20. Talking with Dan Hill about the Design of Melbourne’s CBD and suburbs, and the effect of the built environment on culture and the spaces we live, work and play within

In this podcast episode, we talk with Dan Hill, who is currently the Director of the Melbourne School of Design, in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne.

Put simply, Dan has unique experiences as a designer, urbanist, educator, and leader across multiple industries – and has lived and worked across some of the world’s best cities, where he has developed a deep understanding of culture, buildings, places and cities; how we work, love and live within them.

He has a unique, and interesting perspective on the built environment and how cities and cultures can be improved through good design thinking and planning.

In this episode we spoke about his early years in the UK, his experiences in the Music, Media and Design industries then progressing into the built environment as an Urbanist and his understanding of cities, their function and culture – particularly focussing on Melbourne and some of Victoria’s regional cities.

Amongst other things in this podcast, we discussed:

  • Revitalising Melbourne into more sustainable suburbs
  • The link between cities, people and culture
  • Why Melbourne CBD should and is changing, post-pandemic
  • All the benefits of good urban planning
  • Why are Scandinavian countries happy to pay higher rates of taxes

If you love Melbourne, cities, the built environment and how culture, people and places are brought together to make successful communities – then have a listen!
