Plan Group wraps up construction of cardiac catheter lab at Royal Melbourne Hospital
Thousands more Victorians with heart conditions will receive urgent care at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) after Plan Group completed the refurbishment of a third cardiac catheter laboratory.
The project involved the demolition of the existing consultation rooms, as well as the construction of the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, new patient recovery bays, sterile and non-sterile rooms, equipment room, waiting area, tea room and additional store rooms.
‘Cath labs’, as they’re commonly known, are used for lifesaving heart procedures like stenting, angiography, and inserting pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. Adding a third cath lab means that the RMH can double the number of treatments, and shorten the length of patient stay.
“We can dedicate one lab for inpatient work, meaning that when a patient is admitted through our ED or through the cardiology department, we can offer them the procedure they need on the same day, allowing them, in some cases, to be discharged the next day,” said Director of Cardiology and Associate Professor, Leeanne Grigg.
“The additional cath lab, and upgrades to our existing labs, have the state-of-the-art equipment which allows us to continue delivering the best care for our patients.”
