Australian company Fairbrother has been awarded the construction contract for Werribee Zoo’s $88 million expansion.

The project includes the redevelopment of a 21-hectare Asian elephant habitat, as well as expanded facilities including a pedestrian pathway trail, a viewing area overlooking the elephant pools, and landscapes for priority conservation species.

The Asian elephant herd currently lives at Melbourne Zoo, but will relocate to the improved facilities at Werribee in 2024.

Award-winning Victorian landscape architecture practice TCL is responsible for the design – which prioritises animal welfare while connecting more visitors with Zoos Victoria’s work to fight animal extinction.
