Demolition commences for the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD)
Work on Australia’s first collaborative, hospital-based biomedical engineering research centre has begun, with demolition of the existing site building starting this month.
The $206 million ACMD project will deliver a new 11-storey, purpose-designed centre at St Vincent’s Hospital, on the corner of Nicholson Street and Victoria Parade in Carlton.
Denton Corker Marshall designed the facility in association with laboratory design specialists L2D Architects.
Features will include laboratories, break-out rooms, lecture theatres and purpose-built spaces to facilitate collaboration between researchers. There will also be a dedicated teaching facility on site and specialist spaces – like a kinetics lab.
AMCD’s vision is to position Australia as a global leader in Biomedical Engineering. It is anticipated that the new centre will help achieve this goal, with leading clinicians, scientists, and students working together to accelerate new discoveries in a purpose-built facility.
In addition, the facility’s strategic location will give researchers access to public and private patients – enabling them to undertake benchtop-to-bedside trials.
Construction of ACMD is expected to commence in January 2023. Kane Constructions has been appointed as the builder.
The project is one of several specialist medical centres being constructed in Victoria – including the Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre and the Victorian Heart Hospital at Clayton.
