Australia’s first skyscraper sells for $155 million
Charter Hall has sold Orica House – which is considered Australia’s first skyscraper – to Harry Stamoulis for $155 million.
The building was completed in 1958 and was originally called ICI House after its first tenant, Imperial Chemical Industries. It was designed by Bates, Smart & McCutcheon and, at 19 storeys, was the first building to break Melbourne’s height restrictions.
Orica House’s present-day features include 16,970 square metres of net lettable area and a 4.5-star NABERS rating. At the time of sale, it was held in a Charter Hall-run wholesale fund, valued at $3.1 billion.
Stamoulis and his family – who came in at number 152 on the 2023 Rich List – made their fortune after the late Spiros Stamoulis founded Gold Medal Drinks in 1969.
