Hamton Hawthorn wins ministerial approval

Melbourne University’s Hawthorn campus will be replaced by 350 luxury apartments, following approval of the site’s development plan by state planning minister Sonya Kilkenny.
The apartments will sit adjacent to a Big Housing Build project comprising 206 social housing and affordable housing apartments, which will be managed by Homes Victoria.
The University of Melbourne originally purchased the 1.62 ha site from the Hawthorn Institute of Education for $12.8 million, before selling it to Hamton for $50 million in 2022.
Hamton’s new development will comprise six buildings designed by Woods Bagot. It will hold a 5 Star Green rating and a Climate Active certification as Net Zero. It will also offer 10 per cent of the apartments as affordable housing to enable key workers to live at the site.
Construction is slated to begin in 2025.
