In this week’s episode, Sean Ryan, the Development Director of Greystar, joined me for a discussion. Greystar is an international multifaceted real estate organisation and one of the largest Build-to-Rent developers in the industry.
During our conversation, Sean shared insights about his career journey, starting with his background in Structural Engineering and how he transitioned into development. He discussed the process of developing his knowledge, expertise, and experience in the field of development and the learnings he gained moving into the property development sector.
Our discussion also delved into the topic of Build-to-Rent as an asset class, and the drivers behind it from a developer’s perspective, including planning issues, developing a network to develop projects and understanding the fundamentals.
As an experienced developer within Melbourne, Sean has a deep understanding of the market and the Build-to-Rent asset class. He helped us understand the reasons why BtR has gained traction here in Australia over the last few years and what proportion of the overall housing market it may fulfill in the future.
Our conversation was engaging and informative, and Sean’s logical insights were valuable in understanding the current state and future potential of the build-to-rent market.
Amongst other things, in this podcast we discussed:
- Structural Engineering and stepping into Property Development
- Typical challenges that you might expect as a developer when you’re trying to take a project through planning
- All things BtR and considerations around amenities within this asset class
- How the BtR model will play a role in the residential shortage crisis currently hitting Australia
If you work in the built environment, have an interest in property development, transitioning your career from one market sector into other fields of property/development/construction, or have an interest in Melbourne’s buildings and the much publicised Build to Rent asset class, then have a listen!
