The City of Whittlesea has approved plans for a $2 billion-dollar, mixed-use development in Melbourne’s north by local developer, Riverlee.

Dubbed ‘New Epping,’ the project will transform the former quarry into a mini city that will include the largest medical hub in Melbourne’s north. There are also plans for 110,000 sqm of commercial, retail and hospitality spaces to support some 5,742 workers.

2,000 new homes will be constructed on-site, with 151 social and affordable apartments to be completed in stage one. A 300-bed private hospital, operated by Ramsay Health, is already under construction.

According to an economic impact report, the masterplan project will contribute more than $3.4 billion to the economy – or about one per cent of Victoria’s current GDP.

Once fully operational, New Epping will lead to the creation of more than 7,200 jobs, in addition to the 622 construction roles required each year to complete the 15-year build.

This project is just one of many in Riverlee’s impressive pipeline. The firm is also delivering the Seafarers development – the largest private, landmark construction project in Melbourne since the Covid-19 pandemic, and home to Australia’s first international hotel-branded residence (1 Hotels).
